Is Shapewear Safe?
Modern shapewear is comfortable, reliable, without negative impact on wearers health or wellbeing. But it was not always like that. At its beginnings, shapewear was quite the opposite – uncomfortable, unreliable and with risk to your health!
Shapewears first ”mainstream” success was with the lace corsets in the 16th century. At its early stages, corsets had an undeniable potential to cause health issues. During its early stages very little attention was give to potential health implication, and with the human need to chase their ”exaggerated” dreams and go beyond the natural made those risks even higher. Lace corsets were often tightened to extreme levels and as such had a profound impact on the wearer’s health.
Of course, there were plenty of examples of people wearing their medieval shapewear with no medical issues, simply because they would not push their body beyond its natural limits.
Nowadays and 500 years later, human desire to change and improve the way they look is bigger than ever. Also, human perception and health awareness have evolved since then as well as self-consciousness and one’s need to take better care of oneself. This urged designers and scientists to find new ways to achieve the desired ‘’lace corset results’’ without the negative side effects . Additionally, numerous doctors, clinics and research groups have followed up on those designs to make sure they are what they claim to be – safe. Now there are numerus examples of doctors advice on how to safely use your shapewear (as an example, you can read this article)
As a result, today’s shapewear has virtually no negative impact on the wearer if simple guidelines are followed. You should listen to your body, use common sense, and follow recommended guidelines. Yes, there are some examples where skin irritation may show, but that is simply due to an individuals skin having an allergic reaction to the material being used similarly with people that cannot wear wool directly on their skin. But those examples are rare. Nevertheless, to address this issue, materials and manufacturing methods were further developed with hypoallergenic technology to reduce them even less.
There will always be some individuals that will try to push their body beyond natural limits and potentially cause problems to themselves but compared to the old ways, with modern shapewear they are very unlikely to experience those issues altogether.
Once again, if you listen to reason, listen to your body and to recommended guidelines, you will have NO issues and will only enjoy the benefits from it!
